Today we completed the case, installed the facade pipes, as well as the pipes of the swell organ. Tomorrow the great pipes go in and we tune everything and clean up the loose ends.

Casework Closeup

Here is a closer view of the casework. There will be neutral colored grille fabric from the ceiling down to the black horizontal beam to conceal the swell shades and non-decorative pipes of the great division. The facade pipes are painted gold and will stand between the uprights infront of the black supports.

Well, the casework is all up. Tomorrow the pipes go in and then we start making music.

The stencilled facade pipes from the original organ were found in the attic of the church. These are non-speaking pipes. The paint and gold leaf are well preserved although the pipes are stained from being leaked on.

The stain color of the new casework is a close match to the woodwork in the church. It appears to be lighter in this picture but that is a trick of the camera flash as it is very close.

Today we got the swell wall and shades put up, the wiring run and connected, the blower installed and played the first notes as we blew and vacuumed out the windchests. Not as much visible progress today but lots of little things were accomplished.

Installation Started

Installation has begun at the church. At the end of day 1, all the framework, chests, and wind conductors are installed. Click the image to see a collage of pics from day 1.

No pictures today, but the case is down now and over at the finisher's shop and the last of the pipes are going into the great on Monday. Afterthat, its just some loose ends to chase down and then were off to the church on the 9th of April.

Swell Pipes`

These are some of the pipes of the Swell division. At the left are the offset pipes of the 16' Lieblich, 8' Viola, and 16' Trombone. To the right is the 8' Flute.

First sounds

The facade pipes went in today. They are temporarily held in place byt ties until the hooks are installed on the backs. They also will get cleaned and then painted gold.

Console

The console is assembled and wired with all the new equipment. The organ case and internal parts are complete. The pipes are going in starting tomorrow. Soon there'll be music!

Chest Magnets

Here we are mounting and wiring the chest magnets to the underside of the toeboards. Each white electromagnet opens a valve to admit air to one pipe.

Casework

The case is complete! The finish will be applied once the organ has been taken down. Toeboards and pipes are now being installed.

Bellows

This is one of four regulators (bellows) in the organ. This one handles all the pipes of the Great organ and is 34" x 60". They are all of the "floating top" style with an internal curtain valve. They are constructed of White Poplar plywood with Yellow Poplar trim.

Swell Shades

The swell shades have been completed and erected. The wall that surrounds them and encloses the swell organ will be completed tomorrow and then we will start on the casework.

Swell Pipes

These are the middle C pipes from the ranks that will make up the Swell organ. From left to right they are 8' Flute, 8' Viola, 8' Celeste, 8' Trumpet, 4' Spitz Principal, 4' Koppel Flute, 2 2/3' Nazard, 1 3/5' Tierce. They still need to be cleaned and have new tuning slides installed prior to voicing. Click the picture to see a larger version.

Great Pipes

These are the middle C pipes of the ranks which will make up the great organ. From left to right they are 8' Principal, 8' Metal Gedeckt, 8' Gemshorn, 8' Trompette, 8' Krummhorn, 4' Octave, 2 2/3' Twelfth, 2' Super Octave, III Mixture rank #1, III Mixture rank #2, and III Mixture rank #3. They still need to be cleaned and have new tuning slides installed prior to voicing. Click the picture to see a larger version.

All internal framework, windtrunks, and regulators are finished and assembled in the shop. The pipework inventory has been sorted and the ranks which will be used in the organ have been chosen with very little leftovers from the pipes removed from the church and the Lenore Moberg residence. These 34 trays contain the 19 ranks of pipes which will be used in the organ.

Work resumed January 2nd and as of today all framework and wind chest shells have been finished and erected. The wind system including the windtrunks and regualtors is currently under construction.

Construction continues on all the windchests for the organ. Rackboards have been cut, sandwiched onto the topboards and marked for drilling. We will be taking a break from work on this organ from now until after Christmas while we travel the states of Minnesota and Iowa tuning organs for our many customers. Happy Holidays!!

This is the main Swell chest with topboards installed and the Swell Trumpet chest. The topboards are 1 1/2" thick southern yellow poplar. This is a very dense and heavy wood which is perfectly suited to this use as it provides a firm foundation for the pipes to stand on and also prevents any wind from leaking between toe holes.

Windchests

All windchests have their bottom boards gasketed and installed and we are now working on the topboards of the chests. The swell chest is complete and ready to have the holes drilled for the pipes. Work is progressing on the great chest and offset chests. Pictured is the main great chest with topboards installed and the Trompette chest with topboard. The topboards have not been drilled for the pipes yet.

All the main interior framing for the organ is complete and finished with 3 coats of polycrylic. Southern Yellow Poplar has been ordered for the topboards of the windchests and white poplar plywood has been ordered for the bottom and rack boards of the chests as well as construction of the wind regulators. Work will begin on these items on Monday.

Floor frame is finished and assembled. It is propped up against the wall in this picture. This is basically the foundation of the organ upon which all other internal components will be installed.

This is the overhead view or plan of the new organ showing the location of the various windchests and pipes. The facade is at the bottom of this drawing. Overall size of the organ is about 12' wide by 10' deep by 14' tall.

This is a detail of the joint that I use in the corners of the windchests. This joint provides maximum gluing surface and strength. All other joints within the chests are dado type. No butt joints are used.

This is the frame for the main swell windchest which will hold the pipes for the Flute, Viola, Celeste, Principal, Koppelflute, Nazard, and Tierce. Construction is of solid Western Red Cedar for strength and low weight.

This is the main Great windchest which will hold the pipes of the Metal Gedeckt, Gemshorn, Octave, Super Octave, Principal, 12th, and Mixture.
